As children begin potty training, it can be super common for them to begin withholding their poops. This is often confused with constipation...and the two are in fact linked, but not the same thing.
Withholding is a conscious, or unconscious decision to hold in poop. Constipation is what can occur after days of withholding.
So why all the poop talk? I'm trying to normalize what can feel very scary to potty learners and their parents. The less we fret about bowel movements, the more likely they are to take place.
If you have some withholding taking place (take some zen breaths) and add FAT to your child's diet. Good healthy fats include coconut oil, full fat coconut milk (in a can), seed/nut butters, regular butter, avocado, full fat yogurt, etc. Fats maintain a soft poop, in fact, much better than the ole standby, fibre. Fibre requires a TON of water to do its job, and can also sometimes lead to explosive poops, which is the LAST thing a potty learner needs.
